The Impossible Garden: in short
The Impossible Garden is a botanical park laid out inside former calcarenite quarries, the "pirrere" scattered across Favignana's countryside. It covers about four hectares and roughly half of the route runs below street level, in the underground spaces left by stone extraction.
The garden was created by Maria Gabriella Campo, who from the 1960s onwards reclaimed the stony land around the family house and the abandoned quarry spaces, turning them into a Mediterranean garden. It now holds just under 500 species of trees, shrubs, herbaceous plants, climbers and succulents.
The route alternates stone corridors, tunnels, pools of water and open spaces: the vegetation grows into the cut of the quarries and shows the link between the island's extraction work and today's landscape.
Visits are ticketed and last about an hour and a half, with an audio guide in several languages. The Garden opens seasonally, from 1 April to 2 November: check opening hours, prices and access on the official channels before visiting.

Getting there: The Impossible Garden
It lies in Favignana's countryside, outside the town: access is from the island's inner roads and a small parking area for cars, mopeds and bicycles is available at the entrance.
