Santa Caterina Castle: in short
Santa Caterina Castle stands on the summit of Monte Santa Caterina, the hill that dominates Favignana and shapes its profile as seen from across the island and from the sea.
The site originated as a lookout and defensive position: its height allowed control of the channel between Sicily and the Egadi Islands. The structure was rebuilt several times over the centuries, with Norman-era work and later Spanish fortifications. Under Bourbon rule the complex was used as a prison.
Today the castle is above all a landscape landmark: the climb gradually opens up views over the village, over the two wings of the island, towards Levanzo and Marettimo and, on clear days, as far as the coast near Trapani.
The state of the building and the conditions of access are not constant over time: before planning the climb, check official information and any restrictions in force.
